Granite Countertops Losing Luster?
My wife and I love our granite counters, so I was interested to read that this stone may be losing some of its popularity. Various alternatives, such as “CaesarStone,” “Silestone” and other, engineered-quartz products, as well as soapstone, a non-porous natural stone, are on the upswing.
Additional options include concrete and glass, as well as more exotic ones, e.g., teak and onyx. For some, the decreased cost of granite has made it less “upscale,” and, therefore, less chic than these more pricey choices. Apparently “Corian,” a sold surface acrylic countertop that costs about the same as granite, is now considered more common and less special for the same reasons.
Green alternatives, like “Paperstone,” manufactured from recycled paper, and bamboo are also competing with granite for favor. For more information, see “Granite’s Popularity in Countertops Challenged”
