Mold in the Home
I just responded to a question about possible mold in the home. The homeowner wondered if her health issues were related to mold in her basement, spreading through the furnace. I am not a mold expert, but shared what I know as a long-time Realtor.
I asked her if she regularly changes her furnace filter(s). If not, the problem may not be mold, just dust, and a new filter could resolve her problem. If that doesn’t help, or if she has actually seen mold, a professional mold inspection is in order. Toxic mold can cause long-term, debilitating health issues.
I referred her to Tom Pearson of Nemesis Restoration in San Leandro (510-483-1039). He is a member of my Forensic Expert Witness group. Tom’s company will come and do one test outside and one inside for $350. Each additional test is $100. The tests are sent to a lab that, then, sends back a report. If his firm is hired to do the work, he credits $100 from the testing.
In my experience, these fees are quite reasonable and I believe it is difficult to find anyone reputable and experienced who charges less.
I also referred her to two articles I wrote for my real estate column, “What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You” – “Malevolent Mold Means Misery” and “Mold Strikes Home.”
