Cool Web Site About Lake Merritt and Local Area
After a walk around Lake Merritt, my wife looked up an interesting Web site, then told me about it. Once Upon a Time, Happily Ever After is “a public art project set at Lake Merritt…with the goal of raising awareness and deepening the commitment to preserving and enhancing a cultural heritage that belongs to all the people of Oakland.”
The three main parts of the site are:
- A downloadable audio (mp3) walking tour around the lake
- Signage showing how the lake is tied into the surrounding watershed
- Lake Merritt souvenirs highlighting different aspects of the lake
An intriguing example of information provided by the program is a rock with a plaque saying, “Leon Olson loved to walk here.” Check out the Oakland Tribune article about the plaque and the man to whom it is dedicated.
